International Worker’s Day
This tour starts in Pyongyang, the gleaming capital of the DPRK (North Korea). From here we’ll spend 6 nights in-country. On this tour, you’ll get the opportunity to celebrate May Day, also known as International Worker’s Day or Labour Day, alongside ordinary Koreans.
Along with this incredible experience in Pyongyang, this tour includes a trip down to the DMZ at Panmunjom where the Korean War armistice was signed in 1953 as well as trips to other cities including Kaesong, and the rarely-visited Anju & Haeju.
A particular highlight on this tour is the Mount Myohyang ‘International Friendship Exhibition’ where you’ll get to see the various gifts presented to the nation’s leaders from foreign governments, leaders and organisations.
Highlights
Haeju City is rarely visited by tourists, despite being the administrative centre of South Hwanghae Province. The city serves as a port on the East Sea as well as being officially classified a ‘frontline city’ due to its proximity to south Korea.
Mt Myohyang is a beautiful region of North Korea, at the heart of Mt Myohyang (Myohyangsan) is the International Friendship Exhibition. A huge collection of gifts from foreign leaders, governments and organisations.
Mansudae Grand Monument is perhaps Pyongyang’s most famous monument. Two bronze statues standing over 20 metres tall lie at the heart of the capital and are frequented by locals and foreigners alike who come to pay their respects to the leadership.
Pyongyang Metro is one of the deepest metro networks in the world. The network still maintains some old metro cars from cold war-Germany, although new domestically produced vehicles are being introduced.

Accommodation on the May Day Tour
Whilst most travellers rarely worry too much about the hotel quality on a trip to North Korea, most are pleasantly surprised with the standard, especially in the larger cities.
On this tour, the accommodation is incredibly varied; from the high-class Yanggakdo International Hotel in the centre of Pyongyang, to the enchanting traditonal Korean dwellings offered at the Minsok Folk Hotel in Kaesong and even the functional, yet charming Haeju Hotel which rarely caters to foreign tourists. The Huichon Hotel in Myohyangsan is perhaps the highlight for unique accommodation, set deep in the mountains of the hardly ever-visited Chagang Province.
The facilities in these hotels are often above and beyond what is expected, and even the more quaint establishments come with western-style toilets and all the necessary furnishings for a stress-free visit.

Hotels on this tour:

Yanggakdo International Hotel
The Yanggakdo International Hotel is situated on Yanggak Island in the heart of the nation’s capital. Many wrongly assume the Yanggakdo is the only hotel foreigners can stay in during their stay, although there are plenty dotted around Pyongyang. The Yanggakdo, however, is the jewel in the crown of Pyongyang’s hotels. A true 5-star experience with plenty to keep you entertained through the evening including a bar, karaoke, pool and even a casino!

Minsok Folk Hotel
The best choice for any traveller looking for an experience to match their surroundings. Nestled in the centre of Kaesong’s Old City, this hotel is designed in traditional Korean style. The rooms are separated by small courtyards and a river runs through the centre of the compound. Guests sleep on traditional Korean roll-mats and can spend the evening listening to the sounds of the city outside, or pop into the small bar for a bottle of Taedonggang Beer with your fellow adventurers.

Haeju Hotel
The small, yet functional Haeju Hotel is located in the very heart of Haeju off the side of the city square. Despite not being the best building to look at, the small rooms provide a cosy night’s lodgings and the design harks back to 1980s North Korea.
Huichon Hotel
The Huichon Hotel is set just over the provincial border in the hardly-ever-visited Chagang Province. It is one of the few hotel options available to those visiting Myohyangsan overnight. The modern design of the exterior gives the feeling of an oasis of modernity amidst the thick forests and towering mountains of the region.
